Support group session at Common Ground Athens

Finding Support in Community

At Common Ground Athens, we believe that connection and mutual support are essential for well-being. Our support groups and counseling referral services help community members find the compassionate support they need during challenging times.

Support groups provide a unique form of help that cannot be found elsewhere. In a support group, you connect with others who truly understand your experience. You give and receive support, learn from each other, and discover that you are not alone.

All of our support groups meet in safe, confidential spaces. What is shared in group stays in group. We work to create environments where everyone feels respected, valued, and heard.

What to Expect

If you have never attended a support group, you might be wondering what to expect. Here is what typically happens:

Confidentiality

All support groups operate under strict confidentiality guidelines. What is shared in group stays in group. This creates a safe space for honest sharing and genuine connection.

Facilitation

Our groups are facilitated by trained volunteers or professionals who ensure that the group runs smoothly and that everyone has an opportunity to participate. Facilitators set the tone of respect and compassion.

Participation

You are always in control of what you share. Some people prefer to listen for several meetings before speaking; others are ready to share right away. Both approaches are welcome and respected.

Mutual Support

Support groups are about giving and receiving support. As you share your own experiences, you help others; as you listen to others, you gain new perspectives and realize you are not alone.

If you are unsure whether a support group is right for you, contact us to discuss your needs. We can help you determine which group might be the best fit or explore other options.
